To win a marksmanship contest
and the hand of his beloved, a young ranger makes a deal with the dark
side. Based on German folk legend, the story is set to foreboding, atmospheric
music that pioneered the use of leitmotif in opera. From its famous overture
to its exciting conclusion, Der Freischütz is a seminal work
of German Romanticism and was a strong influence on Richard Wagner.
