Giuseppe Verdi's Aida has been a favorite of audiences since its 1871 premiere in Cairo.
An epic tale of the pull between public duty and private passion, the love triangle between Radames (the Egyptian military commander), the princess Amneris (who loves him but whose love is not returned) and Aida, the slave-girl with whom he is in love is the vocal point of this, the grandest of all Verdi's operas.
